Artful Living in Hickory, NC, Features Works by Elliott Spohn
Artful Living, located on Level Three at the Hickory Furniture Mart in Hickory, NC, will present an exhibition of works by landscape artist Elliott Spohn. The exhibition will open on May 1, 2007, and continue through the end of the month.
Spohn, a native of Brevard, NC, received his BS Degree in Fine Arts Education from Appalachian State University in 1975. He began his career in public education as an art instructor. He has taught painting classes at Caldwell Community College and has served as past President and Director of Caldwell Arts Council. He has won numerous competitions with many works included in both private and corporate collections.
Spohn offered the following statement: "After years of involvement with drawing and painting in every media, style and subject matter, I always seem to come back to the companionship and solitude of the imaginary landscape theme. In the deepest sense I am a non-objective abstractionist because I am most interested in the simple process of putting paint to a surface in various arrangements and compositions. Over the years I have merged many of the techniques and approaches with non-objective abstract painting into landscape images. The images evolve and emerge from a totally unplanned abstract approach to begin each painting. I do not use reference materials, preferring instead to rely on imagination and following multiple paths during the development process. I never really know what is going to emerge as a final image. The mystery is a big part of the excitement of painting!"
