Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, Features Works by August Hoerr, Margaret Katz Nodine, Mike Reardon and Jill Stowe
The Asheville Area Arts Council in Asheville, NC, will present an exhibition of works by August Hoerr, Margaret Katz Nodine, Mike Reardon and Jill Stowe, in the Council's Front Gallery, from May 4 - 25, 2007.
The elements of this intimate exhibit can best be summarized in the artists' own words:
"My conviction is that whatever strategy an artists uses, he or she is responsible for creating their own foundation and their work should have fully integrated meaning," says August Hoerr. "This series of paintings pretty much flies in the face of that conviction -unable to work within a fully integrated system of meaning, I decided to drop it and paint whatever pleased me, improvising, working directly from my emotional state."
"The best things about Leicester - are the faces and hands of the people who have lived here," says Margaret Katz Nodine. "They tell so much without speaking, of patience and strength and a powerful faith. In the diners, hardware stores, and churches, it is these faces that show the wisdom and the calm acceptance of this life. These are the stories I am trying to tell."
Mike Reardon adds, "I create figurative landscape paintings that are built up with a tactile three-dimensional surface on a two dimensional plain, using various materials such as wax and used motor oil. Massive crowds, automobiles, oil diggers, elements from the periodic table, television screens, and other various aspects of our contemporary culture are embedded into the atmospheric landscapes."
"My figurative pieces focus on the relationships of marriage and family, illuminating the ordinary life," says Jill Stowe. "The pastels and oil paintings explore themes of intimacy, vulnerability, our connectedness and our separateness, using as models the people with whom I am most intimate. My work is personal, introverted and about things I see, feel and cherish."
