May Issue 2007
Coffey & Thompson Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Edwin Gil
Coffey & Thompson Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibit, For Fun, For Love, For Life, featuring works by Edwin Gil, on view through May 5, 2007.
Gil has become a household name in Charlotte
for his innovative ideas and prolific talent. This new exhibit
is a tri-dimensional presentation that showcases his penchant
for finding meaning in the ordinary and for making the extraordinary
readily accessible.
The For Fun component of the exhibit keeps exploring his
definition of "imbecile" as one who needs support to
walk. He contends that all of us tend to rely in different "canes"
to hold us up and that it is a sign of maturity and growth when
we decide to take baby steps unaided. For Fun is a compilation
of characters that are obviously dependent; it is easy for the
observer to see what this characters' crutches are.
The mixture of love and passion that Gil feels for his creative
work and life itself gives rise to the For Love aspect
of this exhibit. The artist opens the windows of his soul to reveal
in abstract paintings his inner world and creative energy.
The For Life category manifests a more practical reality:
the need for the material. Since Charlotte's artistic market seems
to favor renditions of landscapes, Gil, provides several colorful
options for those interested in having an original work decorate
their homes. Bright reds, deep greens and royal magentas combine
in his brushes to paint landscapes that evoke the beautiful worlds
we explore in our dreams.
