Points of View Photography Gallery in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Leah Sobsey
Points of View Photography Gallery in Raleigh, NC, is pleased to announce our affiliation with Leah Sobsey and her upcoming solo exhibition Photograms, on view from May 2 - 28, 2007.
Sobsey received a BA in art from Guilford College in Greensboro, NC, and her MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute. She is currently a professor of photography at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Sobsey has shown in California and New York as well as extensively in North Carolina, including The Center for Documentary Studies, Gallery 115, Visual Art Exchange and the Weatherspoon Museum. This is her first exhibition with Points of View Photography Gallery.
Sobsey offers the following about here work: "Photograms are a historical photographic technique. I created this series in the spirit of the 19th century photographer Anna Atkins, whose photograms both cataloged and recorded plant life. My images are less about documentation and more about transforming objects and optimizing chance."
"This work also seeks beauty and purpose in the mistake," adds Sobsey. "I received a bad batch of photographic paper and fell in love with the metallic surface of the damaged photographic emulsion. These accidents can be where new ideas are spawned and I have refined the process in my creative practice. With the already damaged emulsion, I have further manipulated the surface."
Creating photograms is a contact printing process that involves placing objects directly onto the paper, and uses sunlight, photographic emulsion and time to create an image.
