The West End Gallery in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Frederick Hart
The West End Gallery in Greenville, SC, will present a retrospective exhibit commemorating the Catalog Raissone release for late classical master sculptor Frederick Hart, from May 11 through June 2, 2007.
Not since Frederick Hart: A Celebration of Spirit at the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in 2002 has there been an opportunity to view such an impressive collection of Hart's work in South Carolina.
Hart's ties to the state go to the fifties and include attendance at USC in 1960 before going on to sculpture apprenticeships. Best known for such public masterworks as the front tympana of the Washington National Cathedral in DC, the Three Soldiers for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in DC and the Cross of the Millennium presented to Pope John Paul II at the Vatican; Hart has indisputably left a permanent legacy for the art world.
Hart received an honorary Doctorate from the University of South Carolina in 1993 for his "ability to create art that uplifts the human spirit, commitment to the ideal that art must renew its moral authority by rededicating itself to life, skill in creating works that compel attention as they embrace the concerns of mankind, and contributions to the rich cultural heritage of our nation."
On the Board of Trustees for Brookgreen Gardens, Murrells Inlet, SC, from 1986, Hart kept his ties to the state even as his renown grew internationally.
Hart passed away on Aug. 13, 1999, in Baltimore, MD. Senator Strom Thurmond entered a Gold Line Congressional Tribute for the artist into The Congressional Record following his death. In 2004, Hart was posthumously awarded the National Medal of Art by President George W. Bush.
