Adam Cave Fine Art in Raleigh, NC,
Features Works by Nathaniel Hester
A veritable
zoo of abstract animals by Nathaniel Hester makes abstraction
accessible to the most reluctant viewer. Animal Farm is
an exhibition of 20 whimsical prints on view at Adam Cave Fine
Art in Raleigh, NC, from May 2- 31, 2008.
Hester, who is both a mature printmaker and painter, often works
in series as a means to fully explore an idea. Past subjects include
100 oils on canvas imagining, through abstract compositions, the
maritime battles of the Civil War. He has also used etching as
a medium to create mysterious still-lifes featuring children's
bath toys. Some of his subjects, such as those featured in
the 2007 Harvard Review, are purely abstract.
This new series of 20 serigraphs* is both abstract and literal.
Each piece is composed of a grouping of colored shapes, reminiscent
of Matisse's torn paper collages, combined with the name of an
animal in the design. The viewer has no choice but to examine
the connection between the two. In some works like Pig
and Goose the shapes strongly resemble the animal titles.
In others, like Bumble Bee and Gator, the references
are more subtle. The prints in Animal Farm can certainly
be enjoyed for their playful compositions alone. The titles encourage
dialog between viewers of all ages.
Hester is a native of Raleigh. He received his BA from Rice University
and his MFA from Boston University. The artist has studied in
Paris, Italy and at the Art Students League in New York. He is
the recipient of the prestigious Watson Traveling Fellowship.
Hester's prints can be found at Harvard's Fogg Museum, the University
of Miami as well as in private collections across the country
and in Italy, France and Germany.
Adam Cave Fine Art represents a select group of regional and nationally
known painters, printmakers & photographers.
* A serigraph print is created by pressing ink through a screen
of stretched silk on to a sheet of paper. Areas not to be printed
are masked out on the screen and separate screens must be prepared
for each color to be printed.
