Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by J. Paul Sires

Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibition, Homage - Nature/Culture, featuring sculpture in stone by J. Paul Sires, on view from May 1 - June 27, 2008.

This exhibition is an homage to the modernist sculptural movement from Brancusi to Noguchi, focusing on the intersection of nature and culture. Similar to the aesthetic of modernist sculptors, the focus is on minimal elegant form with a contemporary presentation. In contrast, the suggestion of monolithic forms from ancient cultures informs the work as well. The media is granite, a material that suggests the irrevocably timeless qualities of nature. The hand of man is visible as a moment in the stream of time, a sign of his marked presence.

This exhibition includes small classically balanced works and large slabs of granite with low relief carving. Each carries its own invitation to reach out and be touched. Quiet works of poetry in three dimensions.

Sires has exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States and abroad, including the Phoenix Museum, the Cleveland Museum, and the Pallazzo Venezia in Rome. Sires is the recipient of fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council, the Ohio Arts Council, and the NEA. He received his MFA from the Cranbrook Academy of Art.

Selected public commissions include Trammel Crow, Bank of America, Edifice Inc., Arts and Science Council of Charlotte, North Carolina Museum of History, Duke Power Co., the Toledo Radisson, and the uptown Charlotte Arena. Selected collections include the Mint Museum of Art, Hearst Corporation, Georgia State University, Butler Institute of American Art, Elon College, and SAS Institute.
