Lowcountry Artists Ltd. in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Joni Purk

Lowcountry Artists Ltd. in Charleston, SC, will present the exhibit, Two Lifes of the Artist - Still Life and Wildlife, featuring a new showing of representational oil works by Joni Purk. The show will be on view from May 2 - 31, 2008.

Purk's preparations for her wildlife paintings are extensive. She photographs and sketches wildlife on site, emphasizing the animal's motion, action or reaction to their surroundings. She will remain in the area for "as long as it takes" to capture the animal's essence. Purk describes her journeys searching for that perfect setting as brutal at times - ascending steep hills, descending into ravines, remaining motionless for long periods of time. "But in the end," she states, "it's all worth it. The finished piece is all I'd hoped it would be."

An awareness of wildlife and her surroundings is nothing new for this artist. "I have always been concerned with the need to take care of our environment in one way or another." At one point Purk co-founded a non-profit recycling center. The result: Over 900 tons of waste which was once headed to a landfill was diverted to the non-profit recycling center. With continued education and emphasis on a more proactive approach by the citizens, plans were halted for a new landfill facility in the area. "The nation's interest in the environment has only added to the already strong pull I have to nature and my desire to show it through my work."

The artist's still life and wildlife paintings have received top awards in major exhibits throughout past years. This show will attract animal, wildlife and still life enthusiasts. A portion of the sales of Purk's work during the month of May will be donated to the Coastal Conservation League.

Purk's still lifes reflect some of the Southeast's most popular subject matter - peaches, sweetgrass baskets, palm fronds. Wine lovers, too, will be especially pleased with selections from the show.

Purk, whose trademark is The Artist of Diversity, continues to amaze the public with a wide range of styles and subject matter, which has strengthened during her extensive career.

The artist's work can be found in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe. She is represented by galleries in Charleston and Charlotte, NC, as well as the Midwest. A limited number of commissions are accepted each year.
