Sculpture in the South in Summerville,
SC, Offers 10th Annual Exhibit & Sale
Leslie Hutto
Sculpture in the South will present the tenth annual Exhibit and Sale on May 17 (10am-6pm) & May 18 (10am-5pm), 2008, in Summerville, SC's Azalea Park. Among the beautifully landscaped gardens, this national show brings together thirty-five renowned sculptors along with their artwork, ranging from cowboys to ballet dancers, abstract forms to exotic animals.

Sculpture in the South is gaining national recognition for the quality and variety of the artwork presented each year. Throughout the weekend exhibit, the public has the opportunity to get acquainted with sculptors who are at the top of their field and who share candidly about the stories that inspire their work.
There is the classically trained artist who, after teaching mathematics and aeronautical engineering, returned to art where her interest led her to investigate Egyptian, Pre-Columbia American art and Southwestern American Indian clay pottery. Returning to Sculpture in the South this year is the Aussie who started in rodeo competitions in the Outback, guided hunters around the South Pacific, practiced taxidermy, and finally transitioned to sculpture, where his artistic expression surpasses science.
A number of the visiting sculptors have created artwork that the community recognizes because of the permanent sculpture in The Summerville Collection. Meet Susie Chisholm (The Garden), Robert Allison (For Wind and Waves and Everyday Heroes), Bobbe Gentry (Fantasy Flight and Dreamin' of the Big Game), Darrell Davis (Heron and the Sun), Paul Rhymer (Free Ride) and Wayne Salge (Antonio).
For the fifth consecutive year, Sculpture in the South will exhibit sculpture created by students in Dorchester District II Schools during the Artist-in-Residence program. Smokin' Cole's Barbecue will be served on site, prepared by an award-winning SC grilling team.
Sculpture in the South promotes sculpture through education and through the creation of a permanent sculpture collection that enhances Summerville's public spaces. The Summerville Collection is made up of nineteen bronze sculptures, located not only in Azalea Park but also across Town.
Tickets are available at entry. Admission for adults is $5, for students of any age, free.
