UNC Asheville in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Julia Smith

UNC Asheville in Asheville, NC, is presenting the exhibit, The Modern World in Ancient Stories, featuring 15 intaglio and letterpress pieces by UNC Asheville senior Julia Smith. The exhibit will be on view through May 30, 2008, at UNC Asheville's Blowers Gallery, located at Ramsey Library.

Smith's prints focus on the Irish fairy tale "Guleesh," the Japanese fairy tale "The Straw Cape" and the Greek myth "Apollo and Daphne." The exhibition is a culmination of Smith's work toward a bachelor of arts degree at UNC Asheville.

"Through the creation of these prints I attempt to find the underlying theme at the core of a story and present it in a way that a modern observer can access," Smith said. "Themes I have explored in these pieces include love of various types, loneliness and loss, the thirst for adventure, the multifaceted aspects of deceit and the purpose of restraint in society."
