June Issue 2000
Birds of a Feather and Red Door Art Galleries in Hendersonville, NC, Show Works by David Graue
David Graue has been named Artist of the Month of June by the Birds of a Feather and Red Door Art Galleries in downtown Hendersonville, NC. The galleries are a cooperative venture featuring the original work of local artists.
In the main gallery, Graue's landscapes interpret familiar and well-loved scenes. His work is rendered in a meticulous pointillist style which glows with incandescent light and brilliant color. His Jackson Park transports the viewer to a beloved landscape alight with the extravagance and serenity of nature. Autumn Splendor is a luminous scene of trees radiant in the full spectrum of fall colors and reflected in the calm waters of a placid mountain lake. Included in the exhibit are Graue's limited edition prints which portray tantalizing fantasy scenes that evoke a sense of mystery and wonder. Three Fishermen depicts tiny humans in a boat above a multitude of surreal underwater creatures painted in glowing color.
Graue is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and has worked as a staff artist for the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. He became the assistant to V. T. Hamlin, creator of the Alley Oop comic strip. He later had full responsibility for the feature, and continues to be involved in its production. Now semi-retired, Graue has turned to fine art, having studied with Jean Lindabury of the Mountain Phoenix School of Art of Flat Rock, NC. His work has been exhibited at the Flat Rock Village Gallery in Singleton Center, and he has won several awards for his work.
The work of other gallery artists at Birds of a Feather and Red Door Art Galleries present a multitude of styles, techniques and media. Featured are original oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, prints, sculpture, pottery, photography, weavings and reclaimed treasures.
