June Issue 2000
Exhibit at City Gallery in Charleston, SC
The City Gallery of the Dock Street Theatre
in Charleston, SC, will present an exhibit of wood, steel and
rubber by local artist Jonathan W. Hils from June 16 - July 18.
Jonathan W. Hils was born in Concord, New Hampshire on October
11, 1970. He attended Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA
where he received a B.F.A. in Sculpture in 1997. He than attended
Tulane University in New Orleans, LA where he was awarded a full
scholarship and graduate assistantship. Hils received a Master
in Fine Arts in Sculpture from Tulane University in 1999. He is
currently a part-time instructor and studio manager for the College
of Charleston Visual Arts Department. He was selected to participate
in the Palmetto Tree Project in Columbia, SC, earlier this year.
Hils comments on his work: "My work embodies a reverence for craft and materials By engaging in a dialogue through subtle beauty and control, I hope to touch upon a variety of issues both implicit and explicit within each piece. The overall nature of my work incorporates a 'rustic' and 'sentimental' implication which struggles for recognition within contemporary life. Our sense of history and its ties to our development could be looked at in a variety of ways. Metaphorically, I try to present this issue in more humanistic rather than materialistic ways. One might discern a variety of conflicts that arise between material, process and form that also mimic the conflicts we encounter within intra-personal relationships of our contemporary life. I pose the question, of whether, for all of our society's advancement and futuristic aspirations, how far are we from our sense of ourselves and others?
