DownTownes Celebrates First Anniversary With Exhibitions in Greenville, SC

DownTownes Gallery, in Greenville, SC, celebrated its one year anniversary with a Juried Photography Exhibition that began April 27 and continues through June 22. The Call for Entries was open to all photographers in the region, using all media. The enthusiastic response by the region's artists was extremely encouraging for the only photography gallery in Greenville.

Phil Moody, juror and professor of Art at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, SC., was a little overwhelmed by the 176 entries he narrowed down to a show representing 33 photographers. But after a day's hard work, the show was one that reflected very different photographic expressions by photographers with diverse backgrounds and experience. Techniques extended from traditional black and white to color and alternative processes including Polaroid transfers and digital imagery. "This is an enjoyable exhibition because of its breadth in approach and the obvious skill of the artists," said juror Phil Moody, a working photographic artist and teacher for over 20 years.

Three cash prizes and five honorable mention awards were announced at the opening. Kelly Dow of Greenville was given the Best of Show award for her multilayered C-print entitled "The Travelers". The two Second Place awards went to Michael Mathers of Greenville, and Amy Holmes George of Clemson for their black and white prints. Honorable mentions went to Polly Gaillard, David L. Korookin, Kristin Kampsula and Tara Hatley, all of GreenvIlle, and Bill Elder of Tega Cay, SC.

After the success of the first Juried Photo Show, DownTownes is planning to make this a yearly event, an idea received enthusiastically by the photographic community.

The next exhibit at the gallery will be, ASMP South Carolina: Members' Work, which will run from June 29 through Aug. 11. The South Carolina members of the American Society of Media Photographers are displaying their work in a different way, on a gallery wall versus the printed page. The show includes commercial and personal works ranging from advertising to abstract images by South Carolina's commercial and editorial photographers.
