Artists Came to Charlotte, NC, to Give Different Image for NRA Convention & gun violence
Last month, Charlotte, NC, was the site of the National Rifle Association's (NRA) annual Convention, which took place May 19 through May 21. At the same time, artists from North and South Carolina and around the country joined forces with the Charlotte Coalition to Stop Gun Violence to mount a citywide exhibition entitled, TROUBLE SHOOTING gun violence.
June Lambla, curator of fine prints at Hodges Taylor Gallery and chairwoman of TROUBLE SHOOTING gun violence stated that the event was a definite success. Viewers and listeners nationwide saw a different picture and heard another voice other than that of the NRA. Lambla expressed how extremely appreciative she is of the huge number of participants including artists, lenders, supporters and volunteers. "It is evident with the enthusiastic support received nationwide that gun violence is abhorred and needs thoughtful, common sense attention," said Lambla.
A large number of artists made unique, visual statements about the issues and helped inform the public on statistics and emotions resulting from widespread use of guns and gun-related imagery and language in American society each day. The seven venues and two performances worked in tandem with the Charlotte Coalition to Stop Gun Violence to schedule several events during the week.
The following artists participated:
