June Issue 2000
Himal Home Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Artworks by Jessica Deltac
Jessica Deltac, renowned artist and poet from Charlotte, NC, will be the featured artist in a solo exhibition, Sister Spirits at Himal Home Gallery in Charlotte, NC, on view from June 17 through July 22. This exhibit will include works based on the sacred quality of Tibetan Buddhism, Australian Aboriginal beliefs, and Native American spirituality as interpreted by the art and words of Deltac.
The opening reception, the evening of June 17, 6-9:30pm will include a silent auction, Patrons will be privileged to bid on both original artwork by Deltac as well as authentic Tibetan artisan pieces donated by the Gallery. Fifty percent of the auction's proceeds will be donated to two non-profit organizations.
Both Deltac and HHG owner, Richard Sexton, have strong ties to ameliorating the plight of exiled Tibetans. A number of the paintings by Deltac include images of the Dalai Lama and other Tibetan Buddhists. The Tibetan Refugee Association in Katmandu, India, was chosen as a beneficiary because Sexton and his wife had personally volunteered with the organization on two overseas ventures. The second organization to share in the proceeds will be a local Charlotte rape advocacy organization, where Deltac volunteers two to three times a month.
In the exhibit, Sister Spirits, Deltac weaves stories and understanding with sensitive watercolors and lyrical oil paintings. Her pieces emote a sense of reverence akin to that which she holds for cultures of Native Americans, Tibetans, Australian Aborigines and more. Her personal studies and recent travels including Indian Reservations in New Mexico, have strongly influenced this new body of work. As usual, her watercolors are soothing and vibrant, creating a strong base for elevating a subject matter that ranges from simple portraiture to complex ideas like Freeing Tibet. Deltac believes that, "I am exploring and linking together more than diverse cultures with my work; ideally I am encouraging others to explore the hopeful places that each of us holds inside, places that connect us to ourselves, our communities and our beliefs."
Deltac has been exhibiting her work for over
10 years. In addition to two solo art shows in Washington, DC,
this month, followed by two art exhibits in Charlotte this summer,
Deltac has taken on authoring a spiritual-adventure novel based
on the plight of Tibetan Buddhists. She is frequently the featured
reader at Borders Books and other Charlotte venues that carry
her art and poetry books as well as a reader at literary events
in Atlanta, Washington DC, NYC and Chapel Hill, NC.
