Here's a Carolina Arts Update! 7/22/05

erl originals gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is now closed. The following is no reflection on the artist(s) mentioned in this article. They still deserve the historical fact that this exhibition happened.

Here is an excerpt from an article in the Winston-Salem Journal's Dec. 10, 2004, edition: "In late September, (2004) erl's owners, Peter and Lee Swenson, and the company they operate, Bogart Management Group, were foreclosed on by their bank. They were barred from their gallery at 480 West End Blvd. for being months in arrears on rent and utilities. Peter Swenson is facing numerous tax-fraud charges, as well as a growing number of civil lawsuits filed by creditors seeking to collect payments they say are long overdue".

e.r.l originals in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Frank Rowland and More

Landscapes, cityscapes and abstract oils by internationally known artist Frank Rowland will be on display in the main gallery at e.r.l originals in Winston-Salem, NC, through June 20. In addition, large-scale clay abstractions by sculptor Mary-Ann Präck will be on exhibit. At the same time, watercolors by NC artist Mildred Voorhees will be featured in e.r.l's "Gallery G."

Frank Rowland

During his career, Frank Rowland has applied his creative energies to a wide variety of endeavors, all reflecting his love of art. A multitalented individual, he has mastered each art form he has undertaken, and over several decades, made a name for himself both nationally and internationally in the art world.

A native of Altoona, Pennsylvania, Frank Rowland's interest in art began when as a child he accompanied his father, an amateur landscape artist, to classes at night. He studied at the School of Art in Pittsburgh, and the American Academy of Art and The Academic Art Foundation, both located in Chicago.

Among Rowland's accomplished works are oils and watercolors, sketches, prints, photographs, murals and sculptures. Over the course of his career, he has also designed sets for film and stage. Other fields in which he has lent his talents include architectural and industrial design, illustration, animation, museum exhibits, and book design. In addition, his talents as a master printer are widely recognized in the field of fine art serigraphy. During the 1970s, artists with such diverse styles as Erte, Agam, Peter Max, Henrietta Wyeth, Leroy Neiman, and Frank Gallo relied on Rowland to translate their images into fine art limited edition prints.

"I have sought to master many art forms because I like to try new things," Rowland says. "That keeps my art fresh and alive."

Rowland is currently working in oils, including cityscapes, landscapes, and abstracts. With each painting, he relies on diverse imagery and varying degrees of abstraction to evoke rich emotions from the viewer. His new abstract paintings on paper and canvas are conceived in series, featuring bold layers of colors with metallic accents and repetitive geometric symbols.

Rowland has been featured in one-man shows in New York, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, and Paris. His artwork has also been part of group shows throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, France, Japan, Australia, and Western Europe.

Mary -Ann Präck

Mary-Ann Präck's background includes three generations of family art tradition, encompassing both fine art and architecture. From this foundation, she has developed sculpture that transforms the visual language of form, color, line and texture into what are spirited, serious and elegant large-scale clay abstractions.

"My work stems from an intuitive source, rather than a response to social trends and movements, moral causes or political statements," Präck explains. "My subjects are vehicles which connect my inner spirit to a tangible sculptural form, expressed through the use of intense, luminous colors and sharply defined shapes, tensioned against sensuous organic forms and surfaces."

Born in Hamilton, Canada, a town south of Toronto, Präck received her bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Guelph in Ontario, and her associate of science degree in interior design from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale. After traveling for several months in Europe, studying the art history of England, France, and Italy, she continued her art education at Florida Atlantic University.

Präck's works have been featured in numerous exhibitions in the southeast over the past 15 years and can be found in many individual collections. In 1999, she was featured on the website (ceramics.about.com) and that same year, received a grant from the Regional Artist Project of Northwest NC.

Mildred Voorhees, who now lives in NC, studied at the Art Student's League in New York where she is a life member. Her paintings hang in the permanent collections of many corporations, institutions, and private homes throughout this country and Great Britain, including Duke University and Wachovia. She has been accepted in numerous juried shows including the National Pastel Society, the Salmagundi Club Show of New York City, as well as the Southern Watercolor Society and the NC Watercolor Society.

Born in Petersburg, Virginia, Voorhees grew up in Montreal, Canada. She spent 19 years in New York City where she studied under Dan Greene, Ray Goodbred, Gregory D'Alessio, and William Lawrence before moving with her husband and six children to the NC coast. She paints in oils and watercolor, primarily on location.
