USC Exhibit Is For The Birds

A series of illustrated bird books, including a rare set of huge 19th-century Audubon books, will be on display at Thomas Cooper Library through July 7 as part of the University of South Carolina's Bicentennial.

The Aubudon and Others exhibition, located on the mezzanine level of the library, takes visitors through an ornithological journey that features 10 cases of European and American illustrations spanning the 16th through the 19th centuries.

Among the greatest treasures are an original set of Audubon's large Birds of America, published in parts between 1828 and 1838. They were purchased for the university, then called South Carolina College, by the South Carolina legislature. Only 200 sets of this work were printed, and fewer than 130 complete sets - with all 435 plates - survive.

The bicentennial exhibition is intended to give visitors an understanding of the development of bird illustration, provide a context for viewing Audubon's magnificent works and highlight some of the most important early bird books.

Also on display are Mark Catesby's Natural History of the Carolinas and Alexander Wilson's American Ornithology, a mid-l8th century watercolor from the Ethelind Pope Brown Collection and John Gould lithographs.
