Charleston County Library in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Randall T. Shepherd

The Main Branch of the Charleston County Public Library system will present an exhibition entitled, Modernism: Some Footnotes, by Randall T. Shepherd. The exhibition will be on view throughout the month of June, 2002, in the Saul Alexander Gallery, located on the first floor of the Main Branch library located in historic downtown Charleston, SC.

Modernism: Some Footnotes consists of works created in various mediums. According to the artist, "The exhibit is a sort of reply to modernism, or the visual arts from Monet to Warhol. These works are humble 'replies' to paintings and photographs that have puzzled and pleased me. There will be two photographs, perhaps twelve or so paintings, a drawing or two and some modified found objects, ala Man Ray."

"There is no secret handshake needed, and no oblique message," added Shepherd, "but as I filtered the pictures I saw the theme begin to thread itself. There was a nod to Monet, who began to thin the illusion of space in his later work, a pencil portrait of Picasso, an abstract painting of Bacon in the style of Bacon... The chance to exhibit made me see why I work with such fervor in the arts. I am giving answers, as humble as they might be, and perhaps throwing out a question or two in the process."
