June Issue 2002
Upstairs Gallery Offers Works by Jane Allen Nodine
Walls of white shirts and cotton handkerchiefs.
Ironing boards and antique irons. Kitchen chairs. Laundry racks
strung with vellum sheets depicting images of undergarments.
traces is a major installation being presented at the Upstairs
Gallery in Tryon, NC, through June 22, 2002, by Jane Allen Nodine.
The mixed media show uses elements of domesticity as metaphor
for universal experiences.
"The installation is the result of a journey," says
Nodine, "a journey that explores history and daily realities."
Subtitled "an installation of digital
drawings and their subjects," traces presents more
than 25 separate works of art ranging from manipulated photographs
to an entire wall of starched and impeccably ironed white shirts.
Like many installations, traces invites audience participation,
so people are welcome to bring their clothes to iron.
traces has been exhibited previously at the Spartanburg
County Museum of Art, Spartanburg, SC and Anderson College, Anderson,
SC. Nodine is adding new art to the show for the Upstairs Gallery
presentation. Most of the individual pieces of art are available
for purchase.
Nodine is a leading artist in South Carolina
where she lives. She is an Associate Professor of Art and Gallery
Director at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg. Nodine's
work has been widely exhibited throughout the United States and
she is the recipient of numerous awards including Fellowships
from the South Carolina Arts Commission and the Southeastern Center
for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, NC. The multi-talented
artist is equally accomplished in painting, drawing, jewelry,
metalsmithing, photography and computer manipulation of digital
imagery.
Nodine will give an informal "walking" talk of the installation
on Sun., June 2 at 2pm. Light refreshments will be served.
