Over thirty original pieces of work from regional Latino and African American artists will be displayed during the annual juried exhibition entitled, Bridging Cultures: From Africa to Latin America, presented at the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte, NC, The exhibition will be on view through June 29, 2003.
The fourteen artists who have their work showcased are: Christian Guerrero, Betty deValladares, Christopher Jerome Davis, Lisa M. Twitty, Alfred Johnson, Beverly Smith, Gwendolyn E. Redfern, Candance Jennings, Tracy Eckridge, William Brown, Georgia Bennet-Haygood, Nellie Ashford, and Robert C. Moody, Sr.
Two and Three-dimensional works were selected based on the artist's depiction of an intriguing, yet positive aspect of African/Latino culture. The artwork includes paintings, baskets, photography, ceramics, quilting, soft sculpture, and wood sculpture.
The juried works were selected by a panel led by guest curator, Tony "T'Afo" Feimster a local painter and wood sculptor whose artwork has been displayed in shows and galleries throughout the US and the Caribbean.
Also on view at the Center through June 29 will be an exhibition entitled, Southern Comfort, featuring works by T'Afo Feimster. The installation allows a glimpse of a visit to another time and place - life in the southern, rural, foothills of NC in the 1940s and 1950s. Over fifty rebuilt and collected artifacts are included in this slice of life, which includes an authentic replica of an outhouse, water well, front porch, and many other "conveniences".
