Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, Features Works by Kenneth Freed
The Christa Faut Gallery in Cornelius, NC, just outside Charlotte, NC, near Lake Norman, will present the exhibition, Nature of Tranquility, featuring works by Kenneth Freed from June 2 through July 12, 2003.
Freed offered the following about the works presented in this exhibition. "The nature and format of my work over 41 years of making art has gone through many changes. My college work had a decidedly expressionistic flavor and as I have continued, there has been an increasingly representational focus. In some of my large allegorical work, there has been a continuing desire to blend expressionistic and abstract elements with representation. The conflicting nature of these philosophies has been a source of great inspiration. This is also true to a lesser degree with my portraits and landscapes. This entire group of landscapes has been altered from their original location, view and color. These are in a sense constructed landscapes in both color and form to serve the larger aesthetic role."
Freed adds, "These paintings are created with layered techniques that are similar to some of the painting technology of the 15th century. There are various approaches to under painting and over painting as well as hundreds of glazes. This group of paintings is vastly different from the alla prima landscape paintings of my youth in regard to the sophistication of the painting process. Yet there is much in common with the enthusiasm, energy and love of the landscape. For me the landscape has always been a source of tranquility. I love to spend significant time with the subject making sketches and color notations even though, like the Hudson River School, much of the actual painting goes on in the studio. This group of work recounts some of my travel in recent years to the Catskills, New York, Michigan's Upper Peninsula, North Carolina, Tuscany, Italy and even the Pacific Northwest. The expression available through the landscape will always be a format that I will return to with love and joy."
