art space, the Upstairs Gallery, the exhibit brings together some
of the region's most distinguished artists in the photographic

Jon Michael Riley and John Widman. The work ranges from traditional
black and white and color pictures of landscapes, architecture
and still life to panoramic images of people and events.

The exhibit also features two educational programs for amateur and professional photographers. On Tue., June 10, 7pm, John Dickson presents "Infusing Photographs with Feeling: The Art of Contemplative Photography." The informal talk, which is free, addresses how to take pictures that rise above the static, posed and predictable; it is accompanied by a slide show. Dickson has exhibited at Blue Spiral 1 Gallery in Asheville, NC.
"For the Serious Fine Art Photographer: A Day with Jon Michael Riley" is planned for Sat., June 21, 10am-4pm. This seminar covers the interface between traditional and digital photography; opportunities in "stock" photography; how to copyright images; tips on book publication. There will be a short field trip to an outdoor location. Riley's photographs have been published worldwide, and he is in the permanent collection of the Asheville Art Museum. The seminar is $50; to enroll, call the Laurel Gallery at 828/859-6595 by June 14, or e-mail (nholmes@alltel.net).
