June Issue 2005
Broadhurst Gallery in Pinehurst, NC, Features Works by J. M. Henry
Broadhurst Gallery in Pinehurst, NC, will welcome an international audience from golf's prestigious US Open as it features a show of new works by J. M. Henry from June 3 - 30, 2005. The exhibition, Painting vs. Drawing, will include a number of large abstract paintings on canvas as well as smaller works on paper.
In all these works, J. M. Henry has endeavored to combine the immediacy of drawing with fine charcoal and oilstick with the beautifully layered surfaces that characterize his canvases. His palette is generally sparse and understated, with warm tan and beige tones punctuated with black, white, and bits of pure color, but in this show he offers up some unexpected color fields, such as the brittle translucent blue in Of Chicago (tuesday). This emphasis on mark making, combined with an increased use of semi-opaque paint and washes, give Henry's new paintings a remarkable translucent quality.
This show also marks the occasion of the artist's first museum show: a large selection of his works on paper are showing at the Hickory Museum of Art (Gifford Gallery), in Hickory, NC, on view from June 18 to Sept, 18, 2005.
