June Issue 2005

Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, Features Works by Toni Carlton and Hank T. Foreman

The Caldwell Arts Council in Lenoir, NC, presents its June exhibit, Journey to the Source, which features artists Toni Carlton, and Hank T. Foreman. The exhibit runs from June 3-24, 2005.

Toni Carlton

Toni Carlton, a native to the High Country, owns and operates Carlton Gallery, in Foscoe, NC, where she exhibits her own pieces, as well as work from local, national, and international artists. Carlton Gallery originated in 1982 as a weaving studio. Her early work was primarily fiber, including traditional weaving patterns, modern wall hangings, and sculptural basketry.

Some of Carlton's recent works include a vibrant mixed media painting series entitled, Spirit of the Heart. These paintings depict the odyssey of interrelationship amidst personal challenges. She states, "I'm committed to co-creating heartfelt expressions of life's journey". Currently, Carlton's work is a series of mixed media collages incorporating images from personal life experiences, a love of dance, and photographic images taken during travels.

Many of Carlton's pieces incorporate images of goddess figures such as Kuan Yin, the goddess of compassion, and photos of ancient ruins of female deities. In her most recent compositions, as Carlton combines calligraphic and Asian symbols into her work, many of her collectors find these pieces reminiscent of her early acrylic brush drawings. Through the layers of collage Carlton revisits her journey as an artist through the years.

Carlton received her BS in Industrial Arts and Technical Education, as well as Art Marketing and Production from Appalachian State University. Her collections have been exhibited throughout NC, SC, Washington, DC, TX, and NY. On a personal note, she says, "My hope is that my original creations open our hearts and touch our souls to inspire and lift our spirits. I will continue along a theme that speaks to people's hearts and touches them in ways that are healing and helpful in developing an understanding of our interconnectedness".
