The Columbia Museum of Art in Columbia, SC, Introduces First Friday Family Fun Nights
The Columbia Museum of Art introduces First
Friday Family Fun Nights that will take place on the first Fri.
evenings of the 2005
summer season in June, July and Aug. (June 3, July 1 and Aug.
5). Each family night begins at 5:30pm and lasts until 8pm at
the Columbia Museum of Art located on the corner of Main and Hampton
Streets, downtown Columbia, SC. The First Friday Family Fun Nights
complement the museum's extended Fri. hours as part of the community's
ongoing commitment to revitalizing Columbia's downtown area; the
museum and gallery doors are open until 9pm every Fri. evening.
Admission to the family-oriented evenings is free with museum
admission or membership.
First Friday Family Fun Nights are designed
not only for children but also for the entire family. Activities
include storytelling, musical and dance performances, hands-on
art projects, family-oriented gallery tours, kid-friendly tours,
sketching in the galleries, special family-friendly films and
the debut of Gallery Packs - packs filled with interactive
educational materials designed to help families discover the museum's
collection together in innovative and artful new ways. The Gallery
Packs are available for $3 or free for museum members.
"As the mother of a six year old, I am always excited to find summer programs in the evenings for my family to enjoy. The Friday Family Fun Night series is the museum's way of sharing with the community how much fun an art museum can be for both young families and those with older children," said Joelle Ryan-Cook, deputy director at the Columbia Museum of Art.
The first of the Friday evening series is titled
"Animals in Art" and will take place on June 3, 2005.
The event will feature a family-oriented tour focusing specifically
on depictions of animals in the museum's gallery collections alongside
Gallery Packs. Throughout the evening also will be an animal-inspired
art activity available for children and families which will take
place in the museum's main lobby. Sally Harman Plowden will read
from her children's book "Turtle Tracks," which follows
one family's yearly trip to a beach where a young girl learns
about loggerhead sea turtles, and the
museum also will present family-friendly Academy Award-winning
animated short films in the museum's Lorick Auditorium. Snacks
will be available for a small fee by local vendors at the Kids'
Café located outside on Boyd Plaza during the event.
The July 1, 2005, evening is titled "An
Evening in Italy" and will similarly offer Gallery Packs,
hands-on art activities and a gallery tour emphasizing the museum's
prolific Renaissance collection. The children's group, Lunch Money
Band, will also be on hand to entertain families at the
evening event. Finally, the Aug. 5, 2005, First Friday Family
Fun Night titled "Window to the World" will host poet
and author Kwame Dawes as he reads from his book "I Saw Your
Face". Lunch Money Band will reprise their guest spot at
the Aug. First Friday Family Fun Night.
As an incentive to increase museum membership,
each person who becomes a member of the Columbia Museum of Art
or who renews membership privileges at the household level or
above during First Friday Family Fun Nights will receive a special
gift. A family membership to the Columbia Museum of Art
begins at $60 and covers two adults and children 18 years and
younger living in the same household. Membership benefits are
valid for one year from the date of purchase and include free
admission to the museum; a subscription to "Collections,"
the museum's bimonthly newsletter; discounts on museum classes,
workshops, lectures and purchases in the Museum Shop; among many
other membership privileges.
