June Issue 2005
Dog Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, Features New Group Exhibition
Dog Art Dealer in Charleston, SC, is presenting the exhibition, DOGS: Colors, Forms and Stories, featuring works by Lese Corrigan, David Terry, Robert Zakanitch, Joyce Hall and Delaney McDonough, on view through June 18, 2005. Dog paintings and portraiture, with vivid colors, embellished forms and narratives, all depict the wonderful human emotions and attachments we have with man's best friend.
Lese Corrigan
Lese Corrigan was born and bred in Charleston. Her portraits, primarily in oil, are full of vibrant color and surfaces imbued with light and texture. She has paintings in collections throughout the US, France, Great Britain and Japan including a painting commissioned by the Coca Cola Corporation and presented to Former First Lady Barbara Bush. Corrigan was the poster artist for the Charleston Cup Steeplechase 2003 and her work was featured in the fall issue of the international Orient Express Magazine.
David Terry's intricate ink drawings and paintings range from evocative landscapes and portraits to intricate, multi-image montages. A Tennessee native, Terry has been described as possessing a "world view - a coherent thematic approach buried in the Southern Gothic sensibility" and is well known for his numerous book cover illustrations. His work is drawn or painted solely in pen & ink on paper with tinting done in watercolor and gold inks. Educated at UVA, Middlebury, Duke, University of the South and Oxford, the artist now resides in Durham, NC, with novelist Laura Argiri and a number of terriers.
Robert Zakanitch, an important contemporary artist, first reached great critical acclaim in the 1970's in New York City as one of the founders of the pattern and decorative movement. His paintings are in the permanent collections of many major museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, and have been in numerous exhibitions at galleries and in museums around the world including in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art. As with his famous paintings of pattern and decoration, Zakanitch's dog paintings show that art can life the human spirit. In his words his dog paintings are "about nurturing, caring, sentimentality, romance, kindness, etiquette (that's right, etiquette), sweetness, respect, beauty and the sense of well being."
Joyce Hall, an acclaimed artist hailing from the heart of Maryland, has invigorated the modern art community since 1995. Having left a promising career in equine studies, Hall now focuses on her paintings which are exquisitely vivid and profound. Her baroque-like paintings capture a moment in time telling a story. Her work also uses light and color for a dramatic effect.
Delaney Ann McDonough, currently a Charleston resident, was born in New York City. She studied under the renowned illustrators and artists Marvin Mattleson, Jack Endewelt, and Daniel Adel. Her compositions possess the influences of Sargent, Ingres, Wyeth and Liepke. The artist refers to her work as realism with a twist. McDonough's passion is the challenge of capturing the unique personality of each of her subjects. Exhibitions of her work have been displayed at the Art Directors Club and Society of Illustrators in New York.
