June Issue 2005
Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, Features 20th Century Engravings
Bernard Brussel-Smith
Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, will present the
exhibition, Early 20th Century Wood Engravings, featuring
works by Bernard Brussel-Smith and Clare Leighton. The exhibit
will be on view from June 17 through July 26, 2005.
Gallery C presents original, signed wood engravings by two of
the 20th Century's finest printmakers. New York artist Bernard
Brussel-Smith (1914-1989) captured the lives of the American urban
working class during the 1940's & 50's with strongly stylized
engravings reminiscent of WPA artists.
Clare Leighton
Farmers and peasants in the rural South (US), England and the Balkans found their champion in Clare Leighton (1901-1988), who wrote and illustrated numerous books. Leighton emigrated from England to the United States in 1939 and settled in Durham, NC, where she continued to make engravings and publish books.
Large collections by both artists will be on display in the gallery and online at (www.galleryc.net).
