June Issue 2005
Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Richard Fennell and Mary Engel
Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting two exhibitions including: Richard Fennell: New Paintings and Mary Engel: Recent Works. The exhibitions will be on view through July 1, 2005.
Richard Fennell
Fennell, who received art degrees from both
University of North Carolina at Greensboro and East Carolina University,
has long been known for his paintings of North Carolina landscapes.
Using a rich palette of colors and a highly developed brush technique,
the artist creates landscapes and interiors using elements of
what he sees.
Fennell states, "My work, as personal as it is, is basically
the study of light upon form and space. I try to merge a visual
truth of what is seen with basic abstract elements inherent in
painting and nature." Depicting dark red and purple interior
spaces as well as landscapes with purple and lime green skies,
Fennell plays on what he sees, although intentionally not representing
it exactly.
Mary Engel, who received her Master of Fine Arts from the University
of Georgia in Athens and a Bachelor of Science degree at Illinois
State University, explores animal imagery in her work.
Mary Engel
Engel states, "For me, the animal image
symbolizes a bridge between the rational world of humans and the
instinctual world of nature." The surfaces of the sculptures
are rich in texture and refer to human creations, memory, and
patterns. African grave markers and old Southern "Memory
Jars" have inspired these exterior embellishments. Engel
titles her work based on charm bracelets, pins, or other objects
with names. One piece in the exhibition is titled, Watchdog,
with every kind of watch imaginable embedded into its surface.
In business since 1981 in uptown Charlotte, Hodges Taylor is Charlotte's
oldest art gallery, committed to representing artists of the southeast.
The gallery has established itself as a resource for contemporary
art, with a knowledgeable and experienced team. Gallery artists
work in a variety of media including paintings, prints, photograph
and sculpture.
