June Issue 2005
Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC, Features Works by Leo Monahan and Susan Web Lee
An exhibition titled, Vibrant Assemblages, opens on June 3 at the Silver Fox Gallery in Hendersonville, NC. The exhibit, which runs through June 30, 2005, features paper sculpture wall hangings of Leo Monahan and contemporary quilts of Susan Web Lee, new residents of Western North Carolina.
Leo Monahan
Leo Monahan works in the paper sculpture/collage medium, using unique techniques he has developed to portray images of the environment that he describes as both impressionistic and surrealistic. Winner of the first Walt Disney art honor scholarship to Chouinard Art Institute, Monahan continued to receive numerous professional honors, including a life achievement award from the Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles.
Monahan is described as the foremost paper sculpture illustrator in the United States. He began his career in graphic design and ran his own advertising agency from 1960 to 1987, when he decided to place all of his effort into his gallery work.
Monahan and his wife, Karen, recently relocated to Asheville, NC, from the Los Angeles area, where he made his art, consulted for Disneyland, and taught at Chouinard Art Institute, California Institute of Art, the Chouinard Foundation, Disney and the University of Southern California. He also has taught at Tokyo Communication Arts in Japan.
Susan Webb Lee
Susan Webb Lee works with textiles, dyeing, painting and printing on fabric that she designs into contemporary, often abstract, quilts that are primarily used as two-dimensional wall hangings. Like Monahan, she is included in public, corporate and private collections throughout the world.
Lee has been making her one-of-a-kind art quilts since the late 1970s and regularly participates in juried and invitational shows throughout the world. She has been the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Southern Arts Federation.
Earlier this year, Lee relocated with her husband Wally from Charlotte, NC, to Asheville. In Charlotte, she was active promoting public interest in the art of contemporary quiltmaking, through the Mint Museum and other venues. Her work is published in numerous books.
