Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC, Offers National Wood Sculpture Exhibition
Twelve nationally known wood sculptors from across the United States and from Wales are participating in a major exhibit at the Upstairs Gallery in Tryon, NC. The exhibition, Wood Sculpture: A Rhythmical Weave of the Elements, will remain on view through July 9, 2005. The exhibit is funded by Packard Woodworks, Inc., Tryon.
The featured artists are Christian Burchard, (Ashland, OR), Kevin Burrus, (Portland, OR), Clay Foster, (Krum, TX), Mark Gardner and Stoney Lamar, (Saluda, NC), Robyn Horn, (Little Rock, AR), David Nash, Blaenau Ffestiniog, (North Wales), George Peterson, (Lake Toxaway, NC), Michael Peterson, (Lopez Island, WA), Merryll Saylan, (San Rafael, CA), David Sengel, (Boone, NC) and Hayley Smith, (Bisbee, AZ). Stoney Lamar is the exhibit's guest curator.
Collectively, these artists represent some
of the finest, most innovative and dynamic work being
done in wood and with wood combined with other elements like
steel. Their sculpture is found in some of the world's most
important museums such as the Tate Gallery, London, Metropolitan
Museum of Art, NYC, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, American
Craft Museum, NYC, High Museum, Atlanta, Mint Museum of Craft
+ Design, Charlotte, Renwick Gallery of the National Museum of
American Art (Smithsonian Institution), Washington, DC, Yale University,
Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu,
Royal Cultural Center, Jedda, Saudi Arabia.
Complementing the wood sculpture show are two solo exhibits -
Heads & Tales from the Family Tree, a series of narrative
paintings by Blair Martin of (Key West, FL and Tryon); and Architectural
Abstractions, new abstract paintings by Peter Y. Alberice,
(Asheville, NC).
A "Walk & Talk" tour of the art conducted by Stoney Lamar will take place on June 5, 2005, at 2pm. A fascinating documentary film about the life and times of David Nash and his teaching residency at Penland in 2003 will be screened on June 14, 2005, at 7pm.
