Artworks Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by E. Faye Collins
Artworks Gallery in Winston-Salem, NC, is presenting, Water Play, 25 Years of Papermaking Fun, a retrospective of art on hand-made paper by E. Faye Collins, on view through June 24, 2006.
Collins describes her work this way: "The fun is swirling one's hand in water and fiber. The first challenge is making the fiber come together as a thing both fragile and durable -paper! The second challenge is to transcend the medium. I enjoyed the process and the possibilities. It still engages me. Natural fiber, altered by hand labor and the elements of water and air, equals paper. It is an ancient process invented by the Chinese and enlarged by the creative minds of many present-day artists. Paper can be made by pouring macerated fibers on a screen, or by lifting sheets with a mold and deckle from a vat, or by pouring pulp into a mold. This show is one artist's involvement with papermaking as a craft and as an art medium, working with various techniques over a period of 25 years."
"It has been my intention to take advantage of all the natural properties of paper while also making images that are in harmony with those properties," adds Collins. "This show is a record of my years of experimentation and development of both techniques and the expression of ideas."
Collins received her BFA and MFA in painting from the University of NC-Greensboro. She has taken papermaking workshops at Pyramid Atlantic in Washington, DC, and Penland School of Crafts, among others.
