Charleston County Public Library in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Jocelyn Châteauvert
The Charleston County Public Library in Charleston,
SC, is presenting an installation of handmade paper, black walnut
dye, and mixed media by Jocelyn Châteauvert, on view in
the Saul Alexander Gallery, from June 2 - 30, 2006.
Châteauvert is a Charleston-based artist. The installation
is titled, It Became Max's Bedroom. Whimsical and magical,
this work of art transforms the gallery into an enchanted forest
made entirely of handmade paper. Utilizing thousands of sheets
of paper, handmade in her studio in Charleston, Châteauvert
sculpted the paper into trunks, limbs, and fallen logs that give
the illusion of giant oak trees with their great height and elegant
majesty. A site specific piece, It Became Max's Bedroom,
was designed by the artist to enhance the visitor's experience
at the library.
"Visitors will be able to walk into and spend time reading in the space. I believe this will be somewhat sacred space where one can read and would like visitors to think about our wonderful heritage of trees," said Châteauvert.
