City of Charleston, SC, Features Works by Patrick Servedio
The City of Charleston will present the exhibit, Seven Years Later, featuring works in oil by Hanahan, SC, artist, Patrick Servedio, at the City Gallery at the Dock Street Theatre in Charleston, SC, from June 15 - July 17, 2006.
Servedio's serious endeavors into painting and drawing began at the College of Charleston. It was there that he encountered the strong artistic personalities of Tom Durham, John Michel and Cliff Peacock. After graduating from the College of Charleston in 1994, with a BS in Anthropology and a minor in Studio Art, Servedio remained in Charleston and continued to study art for the next four years. During that time, Servedio sought the advice of William McCullough as well as Tom Durham and countless other artists. In 1998, Servedio moved to St. Louis, MO, to attend graduate school at Fontbonne College. There he studied with artists Victor Wang, Tim Liddy, and Hank Knickmyer. In 2000, he received his MFA in Painting. Since 2001, Servedio has been working at Gallery Chuma in Charleston.
Servedio offers the following commentary about his work: "One of the simplest, yet most far reaching and liberating statements regarding art that anyone has ever told me was 'you should paint like you draw'. It is far reaching, in the sense that I am still contemplating and attempting to implement this notion into my paintings seven years after the fact. It is liberating for the simple reason that drawing and lines are the purest forms of an artistic study and investigation. I find the idea of approaching painting as an investigation into my surroundings freeing, because it breaks down the traditional concept of following a prescribed technique as a means to an end."
"This current body of work grew out of my efforts to incorporate more of the principles and qualities of drawing into my paintings. Ultimately, it is my hope that though an unassuming statement told to me seven years ago I have been able to create an interesting and dynamic visual experience. One that brings my paintings closer to my own source of artistic inspiration drawing," adds Servedio.
