June Issue 2006

Delta Arts Center in Winston-Salem, NC, Features Works by Raul Montero

The Delta Arts Center in Winston-Salem, NC, is presenting the exhibit, Ignoring the Impossible: Paintings by Raul Montero, through June 30, 2006.

Montero emigrated to Winston-Salem five years ago from Cuba by way of Miami, seeking a quiet place to pursue his passion of painting. Ignoring the Impossible: Paintings by Raul Montero, will be Montero's first solo show in the area. It features seventeen paintings that capture the universality of crowds, "that common reality that does not deny individuality."

Montero left his small village in Cuba to study in Havana at a very young age. As a teenager, he was selected to become a thermonuclear technician. He quit the program after a year, choosing to follow his aspiration of becoming an artist. He was accepted into the prestigious La Acdemia de Bellas Artes de San Alejandro and studied at Instituto Pedagogico Enrique Jose Varona.

Montero taught at the Escuela Vocacional de Artes Plasticas and La Academia de Bellas Artes de San Alejandro in Cuba. He was recognized as a leading contemporary painter and his works were included in national and international exhibitions: National Exhibition of Contemporary Art, Havana, Cuba; Cuban Contemporary Art, National Museum of Art, Tokyo, Japan; Cuban Art Exhibit, Spain; Tradiciones Cubanas, Museum of Art, Miami, Florida. Montero has had solo exhibitions in such far-flung places as Pescara, Italy and Tokyo, Japan. His paintings are found in private collections in Russia, France, Spain, Venezuela, Germany, Panama and the United States.

Montero's large vivid canvases capture the moods of the crowd as he has journeyed from Havana to Miami to Winston-Salem. Whether it's a drive to the mall, a cell phone conversation, or those still moments needed to collect ones thoughts amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life, they are universal.
