Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Exhibition Focused on the Figure

The Elder Gallery in Charlotte, NC's Historic SouthEnd Art District has assembled a collection of drawings and paintings to create The Artful Figure which opens on June 2 and continues through July 1, 2006.

From man's earliest cave drawings and throughout history, the human figure has been the subject of much of the art that has been created. Elder Gallery's exhibition features the work of numerous artists who included the human figure in their paintings and drawings.

Leon A. Makielski (1885 - 1974) painted portraits and figure studies of well-known government leaders, movie stars, musicians, corporate giants as well as the everyday man. His portraits were included in the Paris Salon of 1911 and 1912 and are listed with the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC. The Artful Figure includes numerous paintings and figure drawings completed by Makielski from 1910 through 1945.

Joining the exhibition is South Carolina artist Philip Mullen, with new paintings entitled Modigliani's Model. Selected paintings from the following artists will also be shown in the exhibition: Paul Ladnier of Jacksonville, FL, Jung Han Kim from San Francisco, Leandro Manzo of Los Angeles, Al Torres of New York, Carl Plansky of New York and Renat Ramazanov from Russia.

"One of my goals since opening my gallery has been to host an exhibition of exceptional figure paintings and drawings," says Larry Elder. "History has shown that most successful artists have been able to master the human figure prior to moving on to other subjects which have brought them acclaim."

The Artful Figure illustrates the evolution of the human figure over the past century and how several artists have interpreted this subject.
