Gallery at Gettys in Rock Hill, SC, Features Works by Dan McMahon, Stephanie Jordan and Alfred McCloud
The Gallery at Gettys in Rock Hill, SC, is presenting the exhibit, To Boddah, featuring grunge inspired work from local artist Dan McMahon, which includes a new body of ceramic and metal work. Join us as we explore the raw, organic and emotional aspects of "grunge."
"It is an interest in nature and the function the Earth has in sustaining life that inspires me to work in ceramics," remarks McMahon. "Working with clay gives me a sense of unity with nature bringing out its focus on function."
Many of McMahon's pieces have been salt fired which gives an "earthy," natural appearance to the clay. The show's title, To Boddah, references this aesthetic as well as the influence that grunge music, made popular in the early '90s by bands like Pearl Jam and Nirvana, has had on the artist's work. The movement that spawned a revolution in the music world also had a profound impact on McMahon's work - an impact that is fully realized in this show.
McMahon graduates from Winthrop University's Art & Design program with a BFA in General Studio and a concentration in Ceramics and Metalsmithing. At the beginning of the 2004-05 school year he and a group of fellow artists created galleryopen, an organization dedicated to the promotion of student artists. They have displayed student work in the N.O.D.A. district of Charlotte, NC, as well as throughout Rock Hill. McMahon plans on moving to Charleston, SC, to continue his art and expand the galleryopen network to other schools and galleries around North and South Carolina.
The Gallery at Gettys will also offer an exhibition of drawings, paintings and sculpture from local artists Stephanie Jordan and Alfred McCloud, on view from June 20 through Aug. 4, 2006.
Gallery at Gettys was created by LaValla Maddox
Art + Design as an effort to promote local visual and performing
artists and provide a space for them to share their energy and
vision with the community.
