Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers 2nd Show on a Painting's Surface

Hayes George Gallery in Charlotte, NC, will present the exhibit, The Surface II, featuring its annual group exhibition dedicated to the surface qualities artists' achieve by building upon a variety of processes and materials. The exhibition showcases works by nationally known artists: Michel Beaucage, Mayme Kratz, Christopher Reilly, Timothy McDowell and Peter Roux. The exhibit will be on view from June 9 through July 15, 2006.

Michel Beaucage's mixed media paintings contain images inspired from nature. The soft forms and subtle tones are accentuated by a three-dimensional quality achieved through building up layers of paint. Each piece, composed on translucent rice paper, has a reflective quality that becomes an integral part of the composition.

Also included in the show are Mayme Kratz's works of cast resin with seedpods, plant forms and other natural material. Emerging to the top of the resin these elements transform the surface of the work from a smooth, hard plane to one of visual texture. The reflective quality of the resin plays with light allowing for a greater perception of both depth and the cast elements within.

Christopher Reilly's encaustic paintings use rich, natural pigment and beeswax to create sculpted images of natural forms. The new works exhibited offer a delicate depiction of plants, foliage, butterflies and flowers. These botanical paintings are filled with the movement and sensitivity that is a signature of Reilly's work.

Timothy McDowell's work explores organic forms and associations within the nature world. The imagery combines the scientific with idyllic, woven together in a beautiful tapestry of color, form and texture. McDowell's paintings of layered beeswax and raw pigment create luminous forms that seem to float in a dreamlike space.

Peter Roux

Veiled layers of color on wood panel characterize the atmospheric paintings by Peter Roux. Images of treetops and boughs moving in the breeze are all wrapped in a warm encaustic glow. The luminous surface accents the feeling of movement as one color bleeds into the next and drips of pigment cascade through the composition.
