June Issue 2006
Metropolitan Arts Council in Greenville, SC, Features Works by Jack Schmidt
Portrait of an Artist,
an exhibit of fine art photography by Greenville artist Jack Schmidt,
will be on display at Centre Stage - South Carolina (CSSC) in
Greenville, SC, from June 2 through July 12, 2006.
The exhibit is the sixth art show in the collaboration between
the Metropolitan Arts Council (MAC) and CSSC in which selected
MAC artist members display their art at the CSSC facility in the
Smith Barney Building at 501 River Street, behind the Westin Poinsett.
Previously on display at Greenville Tech, Portrait of an Artist consists of black and white photographic images of local artists including a painter, a dancer, an illusionist, a poet and a musician. Schmidt, a massage therapist originally from southeastern Michigan, moved to Greenville in 1996 and began studying traditional film photography at Greenville Tech. During the past two years, he has been using a digital camera, a laptop computer and a photographic copier to fine tune the images he wants to convey.
"Jack is a superb photographer who fully captures the essence of these artists in his photographs. Each of these captivating works also reveals the determination and passion of the individual artists," commented B.J. Koonce, CSSC Executive Director.
Although Schmidt has produced work in many of the visual art genres, he has most recently been dedicating his efforts to photography. He does not claim to be a purist when it comes to photographic processes; he is open to using the many tools available to him as an artist. "The final image is more important to me than the process," said Schmidt.
Schmidt's photographs are often of common objects,
or people in common life situations, but are presented to evoke
an emotional response in the viewer. The work often focuses on
the scarred, the aged, and the imperfect to portray the struggles
in life, while holding out the opportunity for healing. He captures
the essence of the subject while creating an image that invites
the viewer to interpret the work in terms of his or her own experiences
and values. Schmidt believes that he can connect with his viewers
through his images by catalyzing an experience or memory and by
encouraging them to look at even the uncomfortable aspects of
life.
Schmidt has recently opened the A Street Studio located in the
historical Poe Mill office building off Buncombe Road in Greenville.
Portrait of an Artist will also be on display at the Metropolitan Arts Council gallery on 16 Augusta Street from July 12 through Aug. 31, 2006.
