Sawtooth School for Visual Arts in Winston-Salem, NC, Photographs from Vietnam Veterans
Dale Doub
The Sawtooth Center for Visual Arts in Winston-Salem, NC, is presenting the exhibit, A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans, on view through June 24, 2006, in the Milton Rhodes Gallery.
After a two-year nationwide tour, the next stop of A Thousand Words: Photographs by Vietnam Veterans will be where the project began - at the Sawtooth School for Visual Art.
The exhibition, which began as a photography
class project, now includes sixty 8"x10" color and black
and white enlargements of photographs taken by Triad veterans
during their tours in Vietnam, a MIA/POW table display and a large
map of Vietnam. In addition, the exhibition now features a panel
under each photograph with a quote by the veteran about their
photo. Over 3,000 prints and slides were submitted by the veterans.
The project began with $70 in startup funds and is sponsored by
The North Carolina Humanities Council, Wal-Mart, Metal Rebel Custom
Motorcycles, CorrFlex Display and Packaging and numerous local
businesses and individuals. Sawtooth School photography students,
volunteers (including elementary, high school and college students)
and veterans worked for seven months to organize, repair any damage
and print enlargements of the thirty-five year-old photographs.
The veterans were then invited back to tape-record their memories
of the photos.
The photographs, quotes by the veterans and
a curator's statement may be viewed at The North Carolina Humanities
Council's website at (www.nchumanities.org).
The mission of the Sawtooth School for Visual Art is to serve
as a premier institution in the North Carolina Piedmont Triad
for craft and art education. Sawtooth is supported by The
Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, and the North
Carolina Arts Council.
