Upstate Visual Arts in Greenville, SC, Offers Works by Henry Fagen
The Upstate Visual Arts Gallery is proud to present, Glances: Landscapes of Experienced Memories and Visions, an exhibit featuring the work of local artist and UVA Member Dr. Henry Fagen, on display from June 2 - 26, 2006.
Originally from Miami, FL, Fagen worked and lived in St. Louis, MO; Normal, IL; Sedona, AZ; and San Antonio, TX, before coming to Spartanburg in 1978 to be the Chairman of the Art Department at Converse College. From 1983 until 2000, Fagen taught at The Greenville County Museum of Art's Center for Museum Education, and he currently teaches at USC Upstate. He has participated in over 70 shows, both solo and combined, in his career, has exhibited his work in various galleries and private collections, and has won numerous awards for his work.
"I am honored to be invited to have an
exhibit of my work in the new facilities of UVA," said Fagen.
He has taught many students and made many friends since moving
to South Carolina, and he is eager to share with those friends
some of his well-known works as well as some newer, more recent
works.
"For over 30 years," said Fagen, "I have been interested
in exploring the personal psyche [and] communal memories of myself
and of people I encounter." Fagen aims to communicate some
of these personal and communal memories through his landscapes,
which he calls "Glances." Though often we only get a
quick glimpse of a landscape while driving by it, Fagen explained,
often the landscape has already formed a unique image in our mind
that blends with other "glanced" images so that when
we recall them they seem new, yet somehow familiar.
Fagen is a member of Upstate Visual Arts, Greenville's
only non-profit organization dedicated solely to assisting local
visual artists.
The UVA Gallery and Gift Shop serve to further the mission of
Upstate Visual Arts: to elevate the stature of visual art and
educate the public to its significance. UVA also exhibits at the
Greenville Commerce Club.
