Vadim Bora Gallery in Asheville, NC, Features Works by Sahar Fakhoury
Vadim Bora Gallery in Asheville, NC, will present the exhibit, A Glimpse, featuring Middle Eastern oil paintings and sculptures by Sahar Fakhoury from June 2 through July 1, 2006.
Fakhoury, who now lives in Asheville, has created a series of oil paintings and sculptures that best express her distress and frustrations of war and violence; its effect on innocent people; and the feeling of helplessness war creates among its victims.
"It's a glimpse at the life and frustrations that other parts of the world live under, which is rarely seen here in America," says Fakhoury. "Being originally from one of the most troubled areas in the world the Middle East my personal life has been shattered more than once because of wars. Yet I feel passionately that art is one way to help communicate between different cultures."
Not having the opportunity to attend art school, Fakhoury graduated from the Kuwaiti Institute for Computer Studies in Kuwait City. She took private lessons from professional artists whenever she could squeeze them in between studies. Fakhoury eventually exhibited her work at several galleries in Kuwait. After the Gulf War in 1990, she moved to Asheville with her husband and three daughters, where she took time to raise her family and adjust to the new home.
In Asheville, Fakhoury continued her education in art by taking workshops and attending life drawing classes. In May 2005 she graduated from the University of North Carolina in Asheville with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Fakhoury works with mixed media, collage, oil paint, clay and other material.
"I'm hoping that my art will encourage people to speak out against war and violence everywhere," Fakhoury says.
Gallery owner and fellow artist Vadim Bora met Fakhoury when both had just arrived in the United States and were exhibiting their works at the Asheville Gallery of Art co-operative gallery.
Vadim Bora Gallery, a unique second-floor gallery overlooking Battery Park Avenue, showcases national and international fine art from professional artists personally chosen by painter and sculptor Bora, to promote international understanding through art.
