June Issue 2007
Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Offers Works by Russell Biles, Elena Madden, & James Couper
The Center of the Earth Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting several new exhibitions including: Greetings from Gaterland - A Russell Biles Adventure, on view through June 30, 2007 and Elena Madden, and James Couper: New Works, on view from June 1 through July 27, 2007.
Russell Biles
Fear, love, anger, and morbid curiosity - this is the stuff of Russell Biles. Every sculpture is subversive. In this new body of work, Biles mocks the media's curious exploitation and obsession with animal attacks. Always a challenger of social norms, Biles' work presents layers of meaning such as innocence lost and the idea that our culture is consuming our children. Exaggerated, contorted, and sometimes disturbing poses and expressions are presented with incredible detail.
Representing Biles for over 15 years, Center of the Earth is proud to present this exhibit. An internationally collected artist, Biles is currently making headlines in New York and Chicago. Regularly exhibiting at SOFA Chicago, his work is included in numerous private collections and museums.
Elena Madden
Elena Madden's dynamic, colorful abstract paintings
capture the fleeting pattern and light of moving water that suggests
nature's rhythms. She has been published in many publications;
most recently an interview in The South magazine.
Madden earned a BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design and
her work is included in the collections of Duke University, BellSouth,
The Tennessee Valley Authority and numerous private collections.
James Couper
James Couper received his MA degree from Florida State University and has achieved national acclaim for his landscape paintings of Florida and the South. A professor and Director of the Painting Department and MFA program at Florida International University, Couper has been painting for nearly 40 years. With numerous group and solo exhibitions to his credit, he has received many awards including a Yaddo Fellowship and Florida Arts Council grants. His work can be found in the collections of IBM, EF Hutton, Southern Bell, the Miami Metropolitan Museum, and Southeast Bank.
