June Issue 2007
Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Tisha Edwards and Gretchen McLaren
Gallery C in Raleigh, NC, is presenting the exhibit, New Horizons, featuring recent paintings by Tisha Edwards and new jewelry by Gretchen McLaren, on view through June 19, 2007.
Edwards, who is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and one of Raleigh's most thought provoking young painters, showed with the gallery from 1999 until taking a hiatus in 2004. The artist returns with a brand new body of work featuring sureal images full of beautiful and strange people and creatures set in fantasical landscapes.
Edwards' work combines Asian aesthetics,
Native American mythology, Circus culture, tornadoes and just
about anything else her imagination can conceive. Of her
own work the artist writes, "What I want most is to impart
to the viewer a sense of wonder and strangeness. My work is meant to
be romantic, comical, beautiful, tragic and entertaining."
Paired with Edwards in this Spring show is Gretchen McLaren, a
remarkable jeweler and metalsmith who's one-of-a-kind
designs combine gold, silver and semi-precious stones in works
of elegant simplicity. McLaren is a graduate of East Carolina
University and has continued her studies at the Penland School
of Crafts also here in North Carolina. The artist has been producing
jewelry and exhibiting nation-wide since 1996.
"My work speaks of the simplicity of form through the qualities of quietness, cleanness and elegance while reducing elements to their simplest geometric forms of the circle, triangle and square. I search for the spirit in each piece," says McLaren. She has only recently joined Gallery C and this will be here first exhibition at the gallery.
