Gregg Museum of Art & Design in Raleigh, NC, Features Works by Diane Howard
Gregg Museum of Art & Design in Raleigh, NC, will present the exhibition, It's Not Your Mother's Yarn - Knitted Works by Diane Howard, on view through June 4 - 29, 2007.
Diane Howard understands color, texture and design and it is never more evident than in this extensive array of sweaters, coats and scarves displayed in this exhibition. Her interest in knitting started when a Red Cross Volunteer came to her school, Raleigh's own Ravenscroft, during World War II and gave the students the option of rolling bandages or learning to knit. Howard chose knitting and thus began a lifelong interest in fiber arts. After this early interest in knitting she learned to needlepoint.
Howard's proficiency in needlework is documented in the Gregg's collection of the National Academy of Needlearts archives. Her needlepoint showcases her mastery of a number of stitches and her eye for patterns. It doesn't take one long to see how this has translated into her fiber work in this exhibition.
In It's not Your Mother's Yarn, Howard showcases the beautiful yarns that are available today. With expert craftsmanship she works with other artists, collaborating along the way. She has searched the world for the best and most challenging materials and patterns and never shies away from the complex, the unfamiliar or the time-consuming. While this show is only a fraction of her work, it does give the viewer a glimpse at her talent and love and of materials.
The Gregg thanks Howard for sharing her passion with us.
