June Issue 2007
Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, Features Works by Vivian Beer, Charles Goolsby and Lynn Saville
Hodges Taylor Gallery in Charlotte, NC, is presenting the exhibition, Exterior, featuring works by Vivian Beer, Charles Goolsby and Lynn Saville, on view through June 29, 2007.
This exhibition draws three divergent interpretations
of the "exterior" concept together. Each artist
represents a different artistic medium, and different approaches
to the outside world - their exterior world. Artists include Vivian
Beer, a sculptor creating contemporary outdoor metal furniture
dictating the space as an outdoor "room". Charles
Goolsby, a painter, juxtaposes the use of a traditional sfumato
painting technique, with contemporary landscape imagery. Photographer,
Lynn Saville, who is most interested in the world after dark,
says she is drawn to settings such as back alleys and under bridges,
"questionable areas where darkness creates especially interesting
forms."
Vivian Beer
With a BFA in sculpture from the Maine College of Art and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy, Vivian Beer has developed a passion for creating contemporary furniture by way of architectural ornamental iron sculpture. Her expressive outdoor furniture is inspired by a hands-on approach to design as it relates to process and product. Beer is currently an artist-in-residence at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina.
Charles Goolsby
Charles Goolsby earned his BFA from Radford University and an MFA from James Madison University. A painter for more than twenty years, his work suggests a contemporary reference to the Renaissance sfumato technique, somewhere between the abstract and representational. His work transforms the traditional landscape painting, and remarks on the transitory nature of small town America. Goolsby is currently the department chair and associate professor of art at Emory & Henry College in Virginia.
Lynn Saville
Photographer Lynn Saville was educated at Duke University and Pratt Institute. She is interested in photographing both cities and rural settings at twilight and dawn, or as she describes it, "the boundary times between night and day." Saville was quoted in a New York Times article as saying "I am drawn toward darkness, especially those settings that seem questionable. If there's a locked gate, I want to climb over." A solo exhibition entitled Lynn Saville: Night Vision is on view at the Mint Museum of Art through July 22, 2007. The artist, a native of North Carolina, currently lives in New York City.
