Cabarrus Arts Council in Concord, NC,
Offers Three New Exhibitions
The nationally traveling exhibition, Sharing the Chores: Works on Paper by Jonathan Green will be on display throughout July 10, 2008, at the Arts Council Galleries in Concord, NC. The exhibition features 11 hand-drawn lithographs and one hand-pulled seriograph by the renowned painter and printmaker. The images portray the importance of shared work, rituals and tradition in the Gullah community of African Americans living in the Low Country area of South Carolina and Georgia known for preserving their African linguistic and cultural heritage. The show was organized by the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC.
Green, who received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1982, was the first known artist of Gullah heritage to receive professional art training. His bright, colorful paintings depict the every day life of the Gullah people: work, celebrations, prayer, storytelling and recreation.
In conjunction with Sharing the Chores, the Arts Council Galleries will also be showing Phillip Simmons: Keeper of the Gate, on view through July 10, 2008. This series of black and white photographs by Claire Y. Young shows gates and other ironwork crafted by the celebrated Charleston, SC, ironworker. The Galleries also will be featuring other Low Country-inspired artwork: sweetgrass baskets by Ida Jefferson Bennett, indigo batiks by Arianne King-Comer, market paintings by Beth McLain and Gullah dolls by Zenobia Washington.
The Lockavitch Gallery, which frequently showcases local artists, is displaying Summertime: A Regional Juried Competition, on view through July 3, 2008.
