Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, Features Works by Gazie Nagle

Charleston Artist Guild in Charleston, SC, will present the Guild's first photography exhibit at the Charleston Artist Guild Gallery entitled, Beyond Belief - A View into Reflections, Shadows, & Textures of Hallowed Edifices, featuring works by award winning photographer, Gazie Nagle. The exhibition will be on display from June 6 through July 3, 2008.

Nagle zooms in on characteristic details of some of the finest Lowcountry architectures - namely places of worship, creatively exploiting the contarast of light and shadows to enhance characteristics that might otherwise go unnoticed. At the inception of the project, some churches were undergoing renovation, presenting a challenge that required imagination. It's obvious Nagle was up to the challenge!

Though the subject matter may not necessarily be new, this series provides a different twist with a blend of trivia on how well the public knows their Charleston. The artist purposely omitted most of the titles in the hopes it would encourage guests, having had trouble recognizing the photographed structures, to get out, tour their city and enjoy some of Charleston's most famous landmarks.

Nagle spends part of her time photographing and painting landscapes and animals. After moving to Charleston, Nagle, an accomplished painter, purchased her first digital camera and thus the passion began. She started out photographing the Edmondston-Alston House, where a painting she donated of the carriage house is on view; she continues today to supply photographs to the museum gift shop.

"If you are creative with the tools you have, that helps puts the art into photography. A little comprehension of equipment and technology certainly helps, but high-priced equipment is not required - that is a personal choice," states Nagel.

When preparing for a show, Nagle carefully considers the theme which she believes is vital to its success. A previous exhibit in North Charleston titled; Archi-Textures, featured close-up shots of natural textures found throughout the Lowcountry. Earlier this year, Nagle was awarded First Place in Photography at the Charleston Artist Guild's Members Show, and recently took Second Place in photography at the guild's Signature Show.

Nagle, a self-taught artist without any formal art background, firmly believes that talents are merely an off-shoot from family roots. She is an exhibiting member of the Charleston Artist Guild and former board member, as well as a member of Community of I'ON Artists, Alterman Studios, staff guide at Edmondston-Alston House, and a volunteer for several organizations.
