Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island,
SC, Offers Group Exhibit
The Cheryl Newby Gallery in Pawleys Island, SC, is showing the works of four painters and one sculptor in a group exhibition, entitled, Down South, on view through June 7, 2008.
The exhibit features twenty-one oils and watercolors by the five nationally and regionally recognized artists. Ray Ellis, Joseph Cave, Ellen Buselli, and Martha dePoo will all have paintings in the exhibition. Bronze sculpture by Gwen Marcus, who is a Fellow of the National Sculpture Society and whose work is found in the Brookgreen Gardens' permanent collection, will also be included in the show. One of the bronzes in the show, Ruby has won numerous awards, including the Bronze Medal from the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, New York, and "The Richard L. Marini Award for Realistic Sculpture" from Audubon Artists, New York.
Ray Ellis, who in collaboration with Walter Cronkite, published a series of books beginning in the early 80's has won acclaim as one of America's most accomplished landscape painters. The first book in the series was South by Southeast, followed by North by Northeast, and Westwind. Now 87, Ellis continues to paint in his Marthas Vineyard studio and has been represented by The Cheryl Newby Gallery since 1987.
South Carolina native Joseph Cave's oil paintings have become highly sought after by astute collectors. Trained as an abstract expressionist, Cave's paintings abound with bold color and form in his depiction of the Southern landscape and harbor views.
Classically trained Ellen Buselli, continues to receive honors from around the country for her magnificent still-life paintings. Her work was featured on the cover of American Artist Magazine in Jan. 2008. For this show, she has created five still-life paintings that fit perfectly into the Southern scenery.
The watercolors of Florida artist Martha dePoo are highly recognizable. Her colorful paintings of the Carolina lowcountry and the Georgetown and Pawleys Island areas are in constant demand.
