City of North Charleston Presents Third Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit at Riverfront Park in North Charleston, SC

Sculpture artists from across the nation applied to the third annual, National Outdoor Sculpture Competition and Exhibition presented by the City of North Charleston Cultural Arts Department at Riverfront Park in North Charleston, SC. The exhibit will be up through Mar. 26, 2009.

This unique exhibition offers established and emerging artists the opportunity to display their thought provoking, extraordinary sculptures as well as compete for up to $14,750 in Exhibition Honorariums and Awards.

Twelve sculptures were selected for this eleven month exhibition by the Juror, Glenn Harper, editor of Sculpture Magazine. Formerly editor of Art Papers magazine, Harper has written for several prestigious magazine, books and catalogues. He earned a PhD in the interdisciplinary Humanities Program of Florida State University, has served on peer review panels for public art commissioning agencies, including the National Endowment of for the Arts, and has juried exhibitions for McLean Project for the Arts, the Washington Sculptors Group, and others. For the past two years he has served as a member of the Public Art Network Council of Americans for the Arts.

The twelve sculptures selected are by twelve artists from seven states. Division I includes ten sculptures that are anchored to a concrete pad. Division II includes two sculptures that are secured to a concrete pedestal.

Division I includes the following works: Sitting Tall, made of fabricated steel by Joshua Coleman from Cleveland, TN; Basket in Open Space #4, made of steel, concrete, and pigment by Jan Chenoweth from Chattanooga, TN; Barnwave, made of wood by Christopher Fennell from Birmingham, AL; Redstone, made of steel and reinforced concrete by Roger Halligan from Chattanooga, TN; Rising Sun, made of stainless steel and bronze by Hanna Jubran from Grimesland, NC; Foos, made of stainless steel by Duke Oursler from Statesboro, GA; Swallowtail II, made of steelplate by John Parker from Glenside, PA; Pod Forms as Icons, made of wood fired stoneware by Liz Vercruysse from Herman, NE; Toy Defense, made of painted steel by Adam Walls from Red Springs, NC; and Odyssey, made of steel by Gavin Weber from Davidson, NC.

Division II includes the following works: Las Carpas #4, made of bronze by Mark Clarson from Chicago, IL; and Moon Over North River, made of marble by Keith Lambert from Beaufort, NC.

Sculpture sites are located throughout the stunning, picturesque Riverfront Park in North Charleston. The impressive Riverfront Park is set on the banks of the gorgeous Cooper River. Visitors enjoy ten acres of walking paths, a fishing pier, an oversized sandbox and children's play fountain. The historic site is centered in the Noisette District, the largest urban redevelopment project ever undertaken in the US.

The Cultural Arts Department is the recipient of the 2000 Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Award for the Arts and receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, SC Arts Commission, the US Department of HUD, and the corporate community.
