Cone 10 Studios in Charleston, SC,
Offers Invitational Cup Exhibition
The artists of Cone 10 Studios and Clay Gallery in Charleston, SC, have invited 13 major clay artists from around the country to exhibit with them in a show of cups entitled, Invitational Cup Show. The exhibition will run through June 9, 2008. Curated by Cone 10 Studios partner Caroline Cercone, this exhibition brings to Charleston the art of the cup as interpreted by clay artists working in stoneware, porcelain and earthenware and utilizing a variety of firing techniques including gas reduction, wood, soda, and oxidation.
The 13 guest artists include North Carolina artist and Cone 10 (formerly Charleston ClayWorks) founder Susan Filley whose contemporary porcelain cups exemplify the refined end of the spectrum. Also representing the depth and breadth of North Carolina clay arts are Doug Dotson, Leah Leitson, Kelly O'Briant, and Ronan Peterson. Tumblers and yunomi cups by Randy Johnson (WI), McKenzie Smith (FL), and Niel Hora (WI) reflect the Japanese influences on these artists' work. New Mexico artist Joe Bova is exhibiting his signature rhytons, cups of ancient near eastern origin usually in the form of an animal. Legendary California artist Lana Wilson's exquisite slab-built tumblers and Nevadan Tom Coleman's elegant porcelain cups and teabowls round out the show.
In addition to these guest artists, Cone 10 Studios members and partners Bev Ballow, Juliann Bannon, Fiorenzo Berardozzi, Chip Burr, Sally Burrell, Betsey Carter, Caroline Cercone, Susan Gregory, Anne John, Arthur MacDonald, Dolly Rennolds, Bruce Thomas, and Pana Wilder are exhibiting their own interpretation of the cup. Sculptures by Berardozzi and Ballow and handmade paper assemblages by McDonald will also be on exhibit.
